JJB Sports - Irish Cup
Round 2
BRANTWOOD – 0 V 1 – DUNMURRY REC
Team: Warnock, McDonnell, Hewitt, Larkin, Fenton, Finnegan, Lennon, McLarnon, Hughes, Rutherford, Arnott
Subs: Camlin, Rooney, Kerr
The Rec travelled to north Belfast to play in the most senior competition in Northern Ireland. The opposition “Brantwood” were once a formidable team in their heyday. The afternoon was cold with a lot of rain making the surface slippy.
1st Half
The Rec opened the game and created only a half chance in the third minute, Rutherford shooting past the post. Emmett Finnegan retired injured with a twisted knee on five minutes with Camlin coming on to replace him. The game was very even for the next ten minutes with neither side creating an opening. Brantwood on 13 minutes should have opened the scoring when the No11 breaks the offside trap and when well placed should have scored, credit to Warnock for standing up well and making the block. Brantwood were now well in the game and became strong in the tackle. The game exploded into life when the Brantwood No 11 was red carded for serious foul play on McDonnell. The game was very even and the half ended with Camlin firing a great shot from 25yards – keeper does well to clear.
2nd Half
The Rec came out and carved an early chance in the first minute when Hughes fired in a great cross to find the feet of Rutherford who shot narrowly over the bar. 3rd minute and the only goal of the game arrived following a great cross by Fenton, Rutherford gets down low and fires a neat header past the keeper. 7th minute Camlin slips a neat ball to Arnott who on the run hits first time only to see the keeper make a good save. 19th minute Rooney feeds Arnott the ball and the strikers shot is lifted over the crossbar. 26th Minute Rooney head against the Brantwood crossbar. Two quick subs sees Hughes and Kerr replace McClarnon and Hughes. The Rec was well on top and with some poor passing and finishing the game ended one nil tot the Rec.
Manager Moore was incensed at his team with too many chances going stray. The win takes the Rec into the hat for the next round in a months time.
Man of the Match: Lennon
