On a good sunny afternoon, the top two team in the Premier section locked horns at Ashley Park. Having already played each other on the opening day of the season a close encounter was surely to be expected.
The game opened with a quick goal scored after only one minute and 20 seconds. Rutherford makes a great tackle ands slips the ball to Arnott on the edge of the 18, Arnott turns and fires home under pressure from two Ards defenders.
The game became a close fought encounter with neither side creating a clear cut chance. The Rec held the edge and Lennon and Hewitt were comfortably on top in the midfield.
On 20 minutes the Rangers created there first real chance when the No 6 blasts a shot which keeper Warnock gets a touch to push over the bar.
26th minute – Rooney plays a long pass to Redpath who when ready to shoot a Rangers defender gets a touch to push for a corner. A great corner kick is hit and the cross evaded all the Rec players.
34th minute – the Rangers drew level following along free kick into the box which finds the no 5 who slots home past a static Rec defence. The Rangers quickly force two corners to cause concerns in the Rec rear guard.
The Rec having been pushed back break forward and a Fenton cross to Rutherford flick to Rooney who glances narrowly over the bar. The Rec ended the half with Arnott hitting the post following a neat layoff by Rutherford.
2nd Half
The Rec started brightly after the whistle and in the 4th minute McDonnell plays a great ball to Rooney who gets a head to the cross only to see the keeper touch over the bar.
6th minute – Rooney booked for a late tackle
9th minute – the Rec’s second goal arrives. Arnott slips ball to Fenton who hits a neat cross into box, the Ards keeper fumbles and the loose ball falls to Redpath to slot home.
19th minute – Ards create a good chance on the break and a cross into the box is picked up by the no8 who when well placed should have scored. Credit to keeper Warnock who manages to get a touch to deny the no 8.
21st minute – Arnott again with a one on one with the Keeper fails to score after the big keeper stands up well to get an important block on the shot.
32nd minute – A break down the left hand side sees two Ards attackers with two Rec defenders – The Ards attacker gets lucky and forces the ball past a defender and the keeper at the near post. (2-2)
The game became heated with several players getting caution by the over fussy referee.
42nd minute McDonnell concedes a soft looking penalty – up steps the no 6 to slot home for (2-3)
43rd minute – Lennon is sent off for a back lunge on an opponent.
44th minute – Rooney is sent off for a second caution.
Overall a poor finish for the Rec who for most of the game had the Rangers on the back foot. More disappointing was to see two midfielders sent off for needless challenges.
Man of Match: Colin Arnott
