On a fine afternoon the Rec played host to newly promoted and highflying Rosario from south Belfast. It was a case of 1st V 2nd in the league which certainly lived up to its billing.

The Rec took the game to Rosario from the whistle and indeed the ball was in the away net after only five minutes. The Referee Grimley adjudged that a high foot was dangerous. On 13 a long throw into the Rosario box found the feet of Rooney who rolled the ball wide of the post when well placed. The next real chance came on 24 minutes when a long ball finds the 6’.6” Rosario forward. In space the big man heads well over the bar.  27th minute the first goal arrived when the referee gave a soft penalty to Rosario. The no11 spots the ball and fires home to give Rosario the lead.

37th minute the Rec were on level terms when Rooney fires home for the equalizer. A Contender for goal of the season hit from all of 28 yards.

2nd Half

The Rec took to the field and forced four corners in the first ten minutes without making the breakthrough. It was Rosario who took the lead on 11 minutes. The ball not properly cleared is fired home in a crowded box to give the away team the lead.

This spurred on the Rec with Larkin in space – the big defender does not get a good enough contact and sees shot go wide. Rosario caused the next scare when on 17 minutes the no5 connects well and forces keeper Warnock to make a good save pushing ball onto the bar.  23rd minute Rosario force three consecutive corners to cause the home rearguard all sorts of problems. 36th Minute Paddy Larkin floats the ball into the Rosario box and forces the keeper to make a save. The Ball lands to Lennon 25 yards out chips the defence and keeper to score another great goal.

The away team were now under pressure and this told when two players got there marching orders from Referee Grimley.
