Ards Rangers V Dunmurry Rec
Saturday 14th August 2010
Team: Warnock, McDonnell, Larkin, Kerr, Fenton, Walsh, Lennon, Hewitt, Finnegan, Rutherford, Arnott Subs: Larmour, Redpath Collins
On a bright sunny afternoon with a slight breeze the match was played on an excellent pitch. Last year runners up were always going to pose a few questions for the Rec side. During the early stages the match was evenly contested with the best chance falling to the Rec when Lennon played a clever chip over the defence which released Arnott whose first time cross was met by Rutherford to head over the bar, minutes later excellent work by Rutherford saw a nice pass to Walsh return the pass to Ricky who enters the box and fires at the keeper. The Rec were on top with good possession without causing to many problems for the Ards side with keeper Warnock was commanding and dealing easily with anything Ards could muster. 39th minute a long throw in at the corner flag find Rutherford at the near post, a neat flick to the back post finds no Rec player to claim the second ball.
Close to Half time the Rangers created their first real opening when Poor defending by the Rec allowed the Ards No.3 to fire over the bar
2nd Half
9th minute a Walsh corner kick is floated to the head of Larkin who blasts over the bar. 11th minute a nice pass by Hewitt finds Lennon in space, Lennon races into box and shot is charged down and cleared. 13th minute Rangers free kick is floated into the box the Rec fail to deal with the loose ball and the Rangers no8 nods wide of back post. 18th minute Walsh plays a neat flick to Arnott and when well placed took his chance first time, keeper holds comfortably. 24th minute the Rec claim for a penalty when Arnott appears to be pushed from the ball. 30th minute sees two Rec subs with Lennon & Walsh coming off and being replaced by Larmour and Redpath. 40th minute and Ards score the decisive goal which gives the Ranges all three points. The Rangers no 8 is given too much time and space he lays a neat ball into edge of box which finds the No 11 who side foots into the Rec net. This was a blow to the Rec who had taken the game to the Rangers all afternoon. On a positive note the Rec will play worse and will collect the points. Great to see Lennon and Walsh back in the midfield. Keeper Warnock had a sound game and the neat footwork of Finnegan was a joy to watch.
